On the lookout for Geisha

Hopped on a bus and went down to Gion, an area which is probably well known for being one frequented by the 'geisha' or the 'geiko' as they are known locally. These are female Japanese performing artists and entertainers trained in traditional Japanese performing arts styles, such as dance, music and singing, as well as being proficient conversationalists and hosts, and entertain at parties generally for wealthy clientele. They dress in traditional kimonos and have their hair styled in the traditional way, along with a white faced make up. Whilst everything you read says you might be lucky to catch a glimpse of them in certain areas on their way to appointments, in recent times access to the areas has become more controlled due to 'tourism stalkers', and people generally crowding around the girls and taking photos.

Needless to say we didn't see any, but had tea and a little wander around the picturesque streets and alleys.

Wow you've had a crazy few days. Amazing photos although sounds hard going in the heat! I'm sure I saw a geisha when I was in Kyoto....that was nearly 25 years ago!!
